Gaby & Andrea. Victoria, Australia. Destination - Borneo, Malaysia & Singapore.

This was our second trip organised with Cindy from Ciao Travel was to the Malaysian part of the island of Borneo. I had always wanted to visit the orang-utan sanctuaries over there, and with Cindy we were able to visit true conservation reserves with no risk of accidentally supporting across those that exploit to tourist demand. Around the time we were going a few westerners had been kidnapped but Cindy made sure we were accompanied at all times and didn’t leave anything to chance. However the absolute highlight of the trip was our time at the Sukau Rainforest Lodge on the Kinabatangan River. We had beautiful walks and boat tours to see the orang-utan, proboscis monkey and such varied bird life, but the absolute best part was we were privileged enough to see the endangered pygmy elephants in the wild; an incredible once in a lifetime experience.

Trip tips:

Instead of having annoying hours and hours of stop-overs, if time permits, stay a few days in Singapore (we flew Singapore Airlines). The gardens by the sea are stunning and the light show at night is mesmerising.

This is a Muslim country, so be respectful of the difference in culture. We went during Ramadan so no one drinks during the day, but it is hot so drink lots of water, but don’t flaunt it and dress appropriately.

If you find yourself in Kuching (likely if you go to the Malaysian part of Borneo) go to Topspot Bukit Mata Seafood Centre for dinner. Can definitely recommend the seafood at #25 but everything looked absolutely delicious.
